chronicles the journey of an active 30-something Dallas-ite trying to keep her head up while grappling with primary lymphedema.

The Waiting Game

So… I was approved for surgery. But, no. I don’t have a date set for it. Why? Because the insurance company wanted to pick a surgeon (at random) to do it. To me, this makes absolutely zero sense. No sense at all.

The surgery, when I first asked my insurance company to cover it was “experimental.” So let’s play this out… if you had a patient that wanted a particular type of surgery that was deemed experimental and a doctor, who does that surgery, advocating on behalf of the patient for the surgery, why would you go to any other doctor for the surgery?! The doctor advocating DOES the surgery.

Re-reading that paragraph, I could see why the insurance company might not want to send the patient to the doctor advocating for the surgery that does the surgery… But, “care about the patient” is part of their job. So… shouldn’t everyone be trying to work in the best interest of the patient?

And so, I wait… another round of appeals… another 30 days of the waiting game… another 30 day delay in life… what’s another 30 days at this point?

Yay! Surgery?
